AN ARTIST OF THE NIGHT: NOCTURNE

Nocturne is a fragment from my current chamber opera project, An Artist of the Night. The opera follows the life of the Art Nouveau illustrator, Aubrey Beardsley, who famously provided the illustrations for Oscar Wilde’s scandalous play Salomé. Beardsley’s prints were inspired by Japanese woodcuts from the Floating World and often emphasized the grotesque and the decadent. By the age of 25 he had died from tuberculosis. The opera explores both the psychological experience of his impending death and the creativity that it engendered.
